Farewell to Professor Paolo Pecorari, a great scholar of Giuseppe Toniolo. Bishop Sorrentino: "An authentic teacher who made a fundamental contribution"
Catholic culture of the Marca in mourning for the disappearance of Professor Paolo Pecorari, 79 years old, Treviso resident in Preganziol who died on Sunday 11 September due to illness after having dedicated an entire life in particular to the study and dissemination of the thought of blessed Giuseppe Toniolo. Shepherds he was emeritus professor of economic history at the University of Udine, where he had also taught history of finance and banking. His name, well known and appreciated in the national field, has always been linked to the richness of the academic contribution offered to make known the role of the distinguished Catholic sociologist and economist Toniolo in the culture and social life of our country, together with that covered by the jurist, politician and academic from Veneto Louis Luzzatti, who was also president of the council of ministers from March 1910 to March 1911.
The list of academic qualifications of Professor Pecorari was very long. He had to his credit the publication of 140 volumes of a historical and economic nature, of rigorous scientific analysis, on the Italian affair between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The deceased teacher and intellectual was part of the Deputation of Homeland History of the Venices and of Friuli, of the University of Treviso, of the Venetian University, of the Galilean Academy of Padua, of the Venetian Institute of Sciences and Letters, of the Institute Pio Paschini of Udine.
The news of Professor Pecorari's death was welcomed with sorrow and sadness also in Pieve di Soligo, which in particular at the level of presidency and scientific direction of the diocesan institute “Beato Toniolo. The ways of the Saints ", in an internal note released in the morning, he expressed "profound esteem and gratitude for the work carried out by one of the greatest scholars of Toniolian thought, already an appreciated speaker in the diocese in the past at important conferences, to which we owe fundamental research and a vast scientific production on issues related to the figure of Giuseppe Toniolo ”. Own in the city that houses the mortal remains of Blessed Toniolo in its Cathedral Professor Pecorari had intervened as a speaker at some public moments, invited by the parish and cultural associations precisely to present the originality and value of the thought contribution of the Catholic leader between the end of the 800th century and the beginning of the 900th century. Especially worth mentioning is the coordinating role played by Pecorari at the conference held in Pieve di Soligo on 28 and 29 October 1988 in Villa Brandolini, coinciding with the seventieth anniversary of Toniolo's death., event promoted by the Municipality of Pieve and the Giuseppe Sarto di Riese Pio X Foundation, with the patronage of the Veneto Region and the Province of Treviso. Speaker on the theme "The economic work of young Toniolo", Pecorari had also taken care of the publication of the proceedings of the conference, published by the types of Dal Bianco editore in the very interesting volume "Giuseppe Toniolo between economy and society". For the historiography of Marca he had also edited the volume on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the weekly of the diocese of Treviso "The life of the people" (1892-1992).
Highly esteemed for his scientific work, of rare kindness and modesty, he is remembered with moving regret for the quality and seriousness of his writings, his insights, his essays and his articles, and also by the many students who have had over the years the good fortune of being followed by him for his degree theses.
“For me he was a master, his knowledge of Toniolo was very accurate - he painfully recalls Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino, biographer and scholar of Giuseppe Toniolo, former postulator and today president of the national committee for the cause of canonization of the blessed from Treviso - because we met and esteemed each other for a scientific production that in his case was more on the historical and economic side, in my case on the theological one. I was very sorry not to be able to count him among the speakers at the Milan conference at the Catholic University in 2018 for the centenary of Toniolo's death, but he was already suffering and unable to participate. His work as a scholar of Giuseppe Toniolo remains fundamental, and his teaching will always remain high, irreplaceable and precious ”. Paolo Pecorari's funeral will take place in Mestre on Friday 16 September at 11 am in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Piazza Ferretto. After the funeral, the coffin will be buried in the cemetery of San Trovaso di Preganziol.
