Giuseppe Toniolo (1845-1918), an economist elevated to the honors of the altars, a 'prophet' of Rerum novarum, suffered from academic marginalization which did not allow him to express all his potential. He is mentioned but little known. This essay fills a gap, bringing the gaze in a systematic and almost anthological way to his Treatise on the social economy and his other writings. The key to Toniol's vision is the relationship between ethics and economics. Precisely this perspective is back today, in the face of a global economy grappling with dramatic issues such as inequality, poverty and ecological disruption. A new paradigm is urgently needed to overcome the state-market polarization, recovering the role, also economic, of civil society. The separate and individualistic homo oeconomicus does not hold up. There is a need for an economy redesigned on the basis of an integral anthropology.
The Economy of Francesco initiative, with which the pope has called young economists from all over the world to make a pact for a more fraternal and supportive economy, seeks inspiration and true teachers. Toniolo is one of them. This book aims to arouse new interest in his thinking and thus also contribute to the rethinking of economics in theory and practice.
