Giuseppe Toniolo man as an end

edited by Aldo CARERA

For originality of thought, strength of convictions and coherent testimony of life, Giuseppe Toniolo (Treviso, 1845 - Pisa, 1918) was an authoritative and intense interpreter of the profound transformations that, between the crisis of the late nineteenth century and the renewed impulses of the new century, were redesigning the economic, social and political structures of capitalist societies. Rooted in many respects in his century, the Catholic economist and sociologist - professor of Political Economy at the University of Pisa - in long-term historical analyzes, enlightened by ethical-Christian approach the problematic profile of contemporaneity that faced the twentieth century. To the dramatic effects of utilitarian individualism, Toniolo contrasted the strength of the intelligent and free initiatives of men moved by a spiritual goal, capable of keeping close the bonds between reason and faith. His was a powerful reminder of the commitment of thought and action of Catholics in affirming the centrality of man in the market economy and in promoting the concrete expressions of a natural sociality in keeping with the structures of democracy. Approached with respect for the past to which he belongs, Giuseppe Toniolo offers himself to open dialogue with today's man and with the new manifestations of social complexity, to reread with us the history of the present.
