Greetings from Benedict XVI to the participants in the beatification of Giuseppe Toniolo

Regina Caeli, April 29, 2012
“Dear brothers and sisters!

I address a special greeting to the pilgrims gathered in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, where this morning Giuseppe Toniolo was proclaimed Blessed. Lived between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he was husband and father of seven children, university professor and educator of young people, economist and sociologist, passionate servant of communion in the Church. He implemented the teachings of Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical Rerum novarum; he promoted Catholic Action, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the Social Weeks of Italian Catholics and an Institute of international peace law. His message is very topical, especially at this time: Blessed Toniolo indicates the way of the primacy of the human person and of solidarity. He wrote: "Above the legitimate goods and interests of individual nations and states, there is an inseparable note that coordinates them all as a unit, that is to say the duty of human solidarity".
